Today I continued with yesterday’s swatch purse project by cutting out the pieces and doing a little sewing.
Below I’ve shown the cut pieces. The left picture shows the pieces for the outside and the flap; top right, the strap pieces; bottom right, the liner and pocket.
The pieces for adding some depth to the purse (still don’t know the official name for those!), are 2 1/2″ wide, but I may trim them down further later. The strap pieces are also 2 1/2″ wide. For these, I’m aiming for a final width of 1″ after folding them in half and adjusting for a quarter inch seam allowance.
(Oops – I showed the incorrect side of the flap – not as pretty as the other side! It’ll look better after the purse is together.)
It turns out that I may not need one of the original swatches. Here it is along with the scraps I’ve created so far.
For the flap, I used one swatch, folded it and used a circle template to draw a half circle, with its middle at the cut edge rather than the fold. I then sewed a scant 1/4″ from the line, cut out along the line, turned it right side out, and pressed. It still needs to be edge stitched along the sewn line.
That’s it for now. Tomorrow I anticipate edge stitching the flap and sewing lines in the pocket to separate it into slots for pencils as well as a pad of paper, and maybe working on the strap, too. We’ll see how it really goes.
Thanks for stopping by!
