What I’m working on 7 (blog-a-day challenge, day 18)

More on the swatch handbag: Today I decided to redo the ends of the straps – basically, to add a piece to make the strap the width of the handbag. First, I tried to make half circle additions and that didn’t work out (see right of picture below). So, I ended up making the angledContinue reading “What I’m working on 7 (blog-a-day challenge, day 18)”

What I’m working on 6 (blog-a-day challenge, day 17)

Getting there with the swatch purse. Today I finished sewing the body of the handbag together and sewed the straps and flap to the body. Then I realized that the flap wasn’t laying right, so I added a filler piece to both the outside and liner and then reattached the flap. I’m still not 100%Continue reading “What I’m working on 6 (blog-a-day challenge, day 17)”

What I’m working on 5 (blog-a-day challenge, day 16)

Today I got back to working on the swatch purse. I sewed most of the body pieces of the purse together. I sewed sides first then the bottom. I cut 1/4″ square notches out at each corner to make the bottom easier to sew. Below, the liner portion is pictured to the left and theContinue reading “What I’m working on 5 (blog-a-day challenge, day 16)”

Before and After 2 (blog-a-day challenge, day 15)

Feeling a little short on time (and lazy!) today, so here’s a before and after of an old design challenge entry. It was my entry for the 1960s challenge, and I didn’t do as well as  I hoped, but I still think it’s a strong design. Below are the drawings I used. I think theContinue reading “Before and After 2 (blog-a-day challenge, day 15)”

What I’m working on 4 (blog-a-day challenge, day 14)

Today I worked more on the swatch handbag, focusing on the strap. Here’s what I did: Ironed the interfacing onto the wrong side of the strap. I realized at this point that I should have made it narrower – maybe 7/8″ instead of 1″ because it was difficult to fold back in half, but IContinue reading “What I’m working on 4 (blog-a-day challenge, day 14)”

What I’m working on 3 (blog-a-day challenge, day 13)

Today was my third day of working at the fabric swatch handbag. First, I edge stitched the flap and worked on the inside pocket. I used a magenta thread for the stitching on both. The inside pocket is meant to hold a pad of paper and a few pens. In the picture below, I’ve leftContinue reading “What I’m working on 3 (blog-a-day challenge, day 13)”

What I’m Working on 2 (blog-a-day challenge, day 12)

Today I continued with yesterday’s swatch purse project by cutting out the pieces and doing a little sewing. Below I’ve shown the cut pieces. The left picture shows the pieces for the outside and the flap; top right, the strap pieces; bottom right, the liner and pocket. The pieces for adding some depth to theContinue reading “What I’m Working on 2 (blog-a-day challenge, day 12)”

What I’m working on 1 (blog-a-day challenge, day 11)

OK, I might be taking a slight chance with this but here goes. I’ve been developing an idea in my head for a purse made entirely of 8″ Spoonflower swatches. I think it’ll work, because I have made up a few handbag designs before, but I’m not 100% sure.  I will probably have to makeContinue reading “What I’m working on 1 (blog-a-day challenge, day 11)”

Before and After 1 (blog-a-day challenge day 10)

I originally did this design as a painting on fabric (see below). I can’t recall for sure, because it was a while ago, but I think I didn’t entirely notice the “hidden” face until I started to work on it digitally in the computer. After that, it seemed appropriate to call the work “wood spirit.”Continue reading “Before and After 1 (blog-a-day challenge day 10)”

Sometimes I Sew 3 (blog-a-day challenge, day 9)

I did a search for neon versions of various colors and incorporated them into this (crazy allover psychedelic looking) pillow topper design. In print, the light yellow green outlines and light blue look a lot more neon than the rest, at least to me. Very curious as to how this might look under black light.Continue reading “Sometimes I Sew 3 (blog-a-day challenge, day 9)”

Sometimes I Sew 2 (blog-a-day challenge, day 7)

Same idea as yesterday’s post, but using Spoonflower fill-a-yard fabric (6″ squares). In this case, I didn’t have 10 that I thought looked good together, so I used 5 squares of my designs (outside) and 5 squares of a fabric I had on hand (liner). I also used even heavier interfacing and sewed a lipContinue reading “Sometimes I Sew 2 (blog-a-day challenge, day 7)”
